When and where did BMW Individual start?
It all started in 1999 in Landshut: The first Individual model in the BMW range was the E46 3-Series, available as Compact, Touring, and Sedan. From these humble beginnings, the Landshut plant has developed over the years into a globally established competence centre for hand-painted parts.
How does BMW Individual work nowadays?
Currently, more than 25 vehicle models are produced in our German plants in Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg, and Leipzig. For these models, all add-on parts are produced centrally at the BMW plant in Landshut and painted by hand by our qualified employees.
In 2017 we established a second hand-painting centre in the USA to include all BMW X models. The facility has the exact high standards of hand painting as its sister plant in Germany.
Why is it so exclusive and unique?
Usually, all vehicle parts are painted by robots, which is impossible to do for all variants offered by the BMW Individual programme. All hang-on parts must be hand-painted, requiring high skill and experience.
Employees spend months training to paint all parts' geometries, which are only painted centrally in the two locations to ensure the desired perfection. Lastly, special packaging ensures that the high-quality finish is even maintained during transport!
What is so special about it?
Due to the exclusivity, many options, and extensive colour portfolio, all Hang-on vehicle parts are painted by hand by skilled craftspeople. To make it happen, we work with suppliers from Spain through the Czech Republic in Europe to South Carolina and Michigan in the USA.
Does this extend the delivery time?
At BMW Individual, we take great pride in delivering the highest quality custom colours to our clients; achieving this level of excellence requires more time and effort than our standard production process: First and foremost, all vehicle parts for custom configurations must be transported to either Landshut or Duncan, which adds an extra step to the production process.
Additionally, creating the perfect colour for custom BMWs is no small feat; BMW Individual has a vast array of paints to choose from, and some require up to three painting passes to achieve the depth of colour desired by you, our esteemed clients.
Finally, each BMW Individual colour is mixed to order at our central plant in Germany, so international colour deliveries may also affect delivery times, and it is worth it, as you will drive a truly bespoke vehicle!
How many colours are available?
The colour palette typically includes an average of 12 colours per model. In comparison, the BMW Individual portfolio comprises over 155 matt and gloss lacquers and is constantly growing!
Are BMW Individual paint finishes available for all BMW models?
BMW already offers its customers a very extensive range of individualisation options. BMW Individual paint finishes are currently not available for a small number of models. However, the range is constantly being expanded.
Can the configuration of the vehicle (wheels, upholstery, etc.) be customised in the BMW Individual Visualizer?
No. The BMW Individual Visualizer has been specially developed for the emotional and realistic presentation of special paint finishes. To configure your dream vehicle, please visit your country-specific configurator at BMW.com.
